SPOKANE -- The Lewis & Clark Tigers will be in unchartered territory on Saturday when they play for the 4A state title. Bringing home the school's first ever championship is all the team can think about.
For the first time in 30 years, LC has won a football playoff game. In fact, this year they have won three. They're now one win away from winning it all.
“That's a pretty big deal when you're winning,” says Lewis & Clark coach Tom Rideout. “Like we told the kids this morning, we're one of two teams that still get to get dressed and practice out of over 90 teams.”
At 10-2, the Tigers have shocked some of the state's best teams. And they don't plan on stopping with undefeated Bothell.
“They're a really good football team, but we're not that bad ourselves,” says senior running back Alex Shaw, “and I think it's going to come down to turnovers and how well, how much you want it.”
“They played in the final last year,” Rideout said. “They're a real solid program. I think we have a chance, though. I know we'll go over, play and compete.”
Which is exactly what got them where they are now.
“We've said it all year that we can do it, we can play with anybody,” says senior linebacker/wide receiver Doug Talkington, “and we've proven it. And to prove it is where that great feeling comes from.”
But nothing would feel greater than coming home with the biggest trophy of them all.
“I can't make any predictions,” Talkington says, “but if we come to play, we've got it.”
“It would be great for the program,” Shaw says., “because we've never won one. I mean, we've never even been this far before.”
Lewis & Clark's shot for a state title will take place Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Tacoma Dome against the Bothell Cougars.
