Bothell's Longest Fan gets new seating arrangements

Bud and the grey Cougars
Bud Erickson is the gentleman still sporting all blue on the right

Having been around the Bothell Football Program and school for many years, I have a sense of history of the area. On Alumni night last year I found out I was a kid just learning the ropes. The alums of this great school ranged from 91 down, with Bud Erickson, a Cougar, Husky, Redskin at its head. He still had the sparkle in his eye every time he saw Coach Bainter commanding the kids in his alma matter. They gave a demonstration of their offensive schemes for the older players. Bud even made it to the Homecoming game as an honorary Captain for his last time. He is a legend in this area and will be sorely missed. We do think he just graduated to better seating and I am sure we will hear him cheer on Friday nights if we just listen.

NW Briefs | Bud Ericksen, former UW center, Redskin, dies at 92

By Craig Smith

Seattle Times staff reporter

Carlton "Bud" Ericksen, a University of Washington center from Bothell who later played with the Washington Redskins, died Monday at age 92.

Mr. Ericksen was the son of Bothell pioneers and served as mayor of the town from 1969-73. He operated an auto dealership in Bothell for 27 years and later was executive director of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce.

As a UW center, Mr. Ericksen scored a touchdown in a bowl game. In the 1937 Pineapple Bowl, he took a lateral from a running back and raced 32 yards for the opening touchdown in a 53-13 win over Hawaii. He also was a standout as a defensive lineman and linebacker.

An honorable mention All-American, Ericksen played in the 1938 College All-Star Game in which the college stars beat the Redskins 28-16.

The longtime Husky season-ticket holder attended WSU home games from 1999-2004 to watch his granddaughter Kimberly play in the Cougar Marching Band.

"Nobody wore purple except him but Cougar fans started calling him 'the friendly Husky,' " Kimberly said.

In addition to his daughter Edith Berg of Woodinville and granddaughter Kimberly Dunlap of Lake Stevens, he is survived by daughter Susan Ericksen of Kirkland and son Michael of San Diego.

Mr. Ericksen had lived with Edith and her husband, Jim, for 10 years and died at home.

Mr. Ericksen's wife, Pat, whom he met while serving stateside as a captain in the Army Air Corps in World War II, died in 1996.

A funeral service will be held next Wednesday at Bothell United Methodist Church at 11:30 a.m. There will be a viewing from 10:45-11:15 before the service. A reception at the church will follow. Interment will at Acacia Memorial Park.

The family is creating the Bud Ericksen Inspirational Scholarship for a Bothell High School senior football player and it will handled by The Bothell branch of Frontier Bank. The family also suggests remembrances to the Bothell Historical Society.

A tale of two Beavers - named John

Two Beavers, John Bowers and John Hekker
Here at the Western Camp last year, Johnny Hekker gives a hug to coach John Bowers. You would almost think they knew that at the start of 2008 football season they would both be Beavers. John Bowers has been named Ballard Beavers Head Football Coach for the 2008 season. An excerpt from the Ballard High School website reads, "He brings more than 27 years of experience as a football coach at the high school and college level. Bowers was an assistant at Division I Bowling Green University in Ohio for five years before moving to Seattle where his wife is the UW gymnastics coach.  He coached linebackers at Bothell High School in 2006.  Bowers is currently the recruiting coordinator and secondary coach at Western Washington University. Coach Bowers fills the position vacated by Alex Barashkoff, who resigned as the Beavers head coach in February.  Coach Barashkoff plans to teach and coach closer to his Marysville home to be able to spend more time with his family."

Congratulations Coach Bowers -we will always appreciate you but we are looking forward to meeting you on the field....Go Blue Train.

After Graduation and the East-West all star game, John Hekker will go to Corvalis, Oregon where he will become an Oregon State University Beaver.

NOTE: Parents of senior players, as you finalize where your players are going to school, or whatever route they are choosing, whether they play football or not, email me, Joy Hekker and let me know what their plans are. I want to post a football player senior graduate roster with their choices for their future by the end of May... Thanks.

BHS Cheerlieading takes State in Super Large Varsity Division

Bothell cheerleading is an active and integral part of sports life at Bothell. The cheer squad shows up at games, meets, matches, all year long. They suffer the rain and the elements with the outdoor sports, and keep the crowds going during the indoor ones. This year Bothell competed in several championship tournaments with great success. The results are:

  • Saturday, February 9th - "Spiritfest" at Oak Harbor High School
    1st place
  • Saturday, March 15th - "Galaxy Challenge" at Kentwood High School
    1st place
  • Saturday, March 22nd - "WIAA State Championship" at BCC

Congratulations to Bothell High School Cheer!
WIAA State Cheer Champions in the "Super Large" Division!

If you have ever seen the precision and stunts the girls do, you would know it is as complicated as formal gymnastics competition with 24 girls at once. These are fine athletes. A cheerleader from Skyview was quoted in the Seattle Times article as saying, "Cheerleading's hard, If it were any easier, they'd call it football."

T Dome Sadness

Boone and Coach LeonardThis year at Bothell, the theme was "Its more than a game when you're family" and in so many ways that has been the truth. These men have become a family.

We must all remember that families are such dynamic things. Who knows a family that only has good days? Families face miraculous joyful days and utterly misesrable days; the birth of a baby, the severe illness of a loved one. Some face seasons of hard days.

Today was a hard day as Bothell returned home from the Tacoma Dome without a State Championship. This was a hard, hard day, but only a day. This has not been the season, this has been a day, and it seems like it is our choice as a family member whether we hold on to the day and make it a season of sadness or do we hold on to the season of joy and amazing accomplishments and consider this just a day.

But all that work....this is just a day, and the work was not wasted. It is what brought you this far, and made you who you are now.

I let people down....this is just a day...sometimes that happens in a family, and the smart families forgive, grow, and go on.

I feel so angry... This is just a day...don't let it make you bitter or jaded. You are not the same, share it. "Happiness shared is happiness multiplied, sadness shared is sadness halved."

Even this hard day had good pieces. Patrick's run, the first drive, the last TD for Bothell.

Families who thrive have this dynamic and bear eachother's burdens. We laugh together, we cry together, we go on, together.

As a community that values family, remember to congratulate the Cougars you see around the area. Give them a "hello" THANK them for the best season Bothell has had to date, and forgive them for this day.

Bothell Beats Ferris at Home in the Snow 14 - 7

Defense Plays Key Role

The defense holds tough minimizing the abilities of Minnerly and Karstetter for the big plays. 63 Zach Cooper, 65 Matt Cornwall, 53 Jackson Pierce, and 55 Eric Phillips hold the Saxon hordes at bay.

Offense provides yards when needed

Johnny Hekker makes the passes when yardage is critical. In the third quarter Johnny hit Perry Conricode to get out of a third and 25 yards situation.

Thanking fellow warriors

Time for 'thanks giving' as the boys congratulate one of the toughest teams we played all year. Great job by the Saxons. Great season.

Celebrating the W!

Celebrating the Win as they charged off the field, 23 Rami Salha, 5 Nate Proulx, 42 Thomas Guidon, 56 Robby Storm, and 20 Jon Kirchner can't wait to get back to the huge croud that came all the way to Spokane to see the Cougs play.

Jon Kirchner runs for the goal as OH pursues in vain

Every day this last week the rumors were flying, the blogs and forums were filling up with the Oak Harbor fans basically 'calling out' Bothell. When it wasn't their bravado saying they would win the game, it was about slamming Pop Keeney and trying to change the venue. And what did Bothell do...we showed up. The fans showed up in numbers, as usual, early, and excited. The team showed up all week, at film sessions doing their homework, in private strategy meetings coming together with one heart, in practice perfecting their execution of the plan. The "Red Coats" of Pop Keeney showed up to prepare PK and keep things in order. The outcome; 8000 fans at Pop Keeney watched as Bothell was near perfect. Oak Harbor was not really in the game from the beginning. The only touchdown against the first team was off a fumble.

For Bothell, this was time to do their job and take another step into new territory. This is the first team in Bothell history to go 12 and 0 in one season. This team has 5 shut outs and has not allowed more than 17 points in a game. Bothell is averaging 35.5 points per game and allowing an average of 7 points per game in comparison.

So as the days roll on through this week it is just another week they get to practice together and do what they do. Play football as brothers.

Bothell's Blue Train Rolls Through Central 31-17

From the first snap, the Bothell Blue Train was rolling, but not without resistence.

Bothell's Coach Bainter gets the offense ready as coaches watch

Central Kitsap presented the best competition yet this season. Their players were large where they needed to be large and fast where they needed to be fast. The teams were matched pretty evenly in skill and heart. The Central Kitsap (CK) team came to Pop Keeney to play thier first playoff game in ten years. The team and their crowd were into the game looking for a win all the way to the last whistle.

Bothell Defense in action against CK

The first half was a head to head rumble with Bothell pulling through 14-10 at halftime. CK fumbled the ball near the endzone and Bothell was able to capitalize a few plays later for a touchdown. Patrick Otterbech, wearing jersey #36 to support his injured comrade Trey Burwick, ran 34 yards on a third down play to set up the second Bothell score.

The second half was owned by Bothell due to experience, maturity, and coaching. Our defnse gave up the most yardage they have allowed this year, but CK earned every point. Mc Donald was their leading rusher and had to fight for every inch to get his two TDs. Simonis is an accurate and tenatious QB who will be wearing some powerful bruises tonight.

Johnny Hekker was 'spot on' hitting 8 out of 10 passes and a touchdown toss to Ben Moschel found him all alone in the end zone. Kurt Stottlemyer had two interceptions and a couple of nice receptions from Hekker. Cory Burk was on fire smashing people, rushing, and taking snaps. I totally lost that play until it was over. Luckily, so did CK. Well done Blue Train keep rumbling on the track to the Dome.

Eric Kirchner, the Voice of Bothell Football

Eric Kirchner

For the last two years Bothell Football has had the privilege of having Eric Kirchner, King 5 TV announcer, in the booth. Eric always adds his own special colors to the game, while having to stay within the Northshore School District, and Bothell High Athletic Department guidelines. It has been an amazing sacrifice on behalf of the Kirchners since Eric is Jon Kirchner's father and he would have an easier time sitting with his lovely wife Becky watching their star running back.

As an audience, the whole Bothell community appreciates his pre-game music, the professionalism of his announcing, and his amazing dedication to the team. Jon graduates this year, so we want to make sure we tell this wonderful man THANKS, for his special gift to Bothell Football. "You're lookin' good Eric!"

Ebb Tide for Gig Harbor | Bothell 35 - Tides 0

Gig Harbor rolled into Pop Keeney with big players, lots of heart, and big hopes that this would be the upset of the season. They hit Bothell hard, some hits you could hear from the stands, and we definitely saw the effects on our players by the end of the game, but Bothell came to execute a game plan. At playoff time, every week is "bloody stump" week. Here is where you dig down into your soul and come up with things you never thought possible.

Bothell executed in all areas. Offensively our running and passing were both successfull with great showings by Jonathan Kirchner, Perry Conricode, Patrick Ottorbeck, Kirt Stottlemyer, and QB Johnny Hekker. Our O-Line was their best yet. Our defense was near flawless as they posted their 5th shut out on the season. The Tides went 3 and out on nearly every series, and their yardage for the first half was less than the score for BHS. There was huge blocking (as usual) by Trey Burwick, a nice pick by Kirt Stottlemyer, and Cory Burk took out the legs of the giants, as the defense played full out for 4 quarters. Our best wishes for Trey Burwick that his injury is minor and we have him back healthy soon.

Reminder; view and buy Tony's pictures on his website gallery. These are must see, and must have photos.

School is - Doing the Right Thing!

Nate Proulx gets scholarship
Nate Proulx receives scholarship and award for outstanding student athlete by Great American Rivalries.

Nate Proulx stands as a great role model, on and off the field. On October 20th on the night of the Senior Game, iHigh.com broadcast the Bothell vs. Inglemoor game to troops and other viewers around the world. The broadcast was part of the "Great American Rivalries" series. During this game, iHigh.com, in conjunction with the rivalry series, awards special scholastic scholarships for the highest level student athlete on both teams.

For Bothell that honor went to Captain Nate Proulx. Not only does Nate have a stellar 3.71 grade point average, but he has other amazing achievements. Nate has started every football game since he came to Bothell. He shows up to practice, sick, injured, exhausted, burdened by a rigorous schedule and responsibilities: and the minute he hits the turf, he is 100% there. His work ethic more than adequately meets the demands of his complex school, life, and family priorities. He is a multiple sport athlete, a major contributor as a safety on the team, and was chosen as "Mr. Bothell" this year. Nate has a passion for the team and a desire to lead them all the way to the top. Thanks for choosing excellence in all you do....that is - doing the right thing. Congrats, Nate!

Defense! Racking up the Zeros

Theo Hunt picks up Juanita QB after hit

Theo Hunt, Thomas Guidon, Evan Hudson, and Patrick Otterbeck pick up Juanita QB after a sack.

An undefeated season, a KingCo 4A Championship, being able to move on to the playoffs....priceless. To rack up 4 shut outs in a season came at a high price.

Bothell's defense has paid that price day after day, game after game. The price was paid in the gym. (Most players lift four days a week all year long) The price was paid in tough hits every day in practice. (Our yellow hats are a tough lot that enjoy sticking it to the 1s and 2s so they can all get better.) The defense has played oversized D-1 prospect players that towered over them at the line of scrimmage. Speed, skill, and heart have separated them from the pack. Practicing the tough speed and agility drills of Coach Christianson and Coach Hoyle has delivered the speed. Implementing the strategies of Coach Bainter and staff has added the skill. The sense of family born out of camps, dinners together, and school relationships has added the heart.

Defense swarms the ball
Defense swarms the ball

All that pressure and impact can play havoc on the teams bodies at this stage in the game. Injuries are critical as we move into playoffs. If you want to be inspired, watch our defense. They fall down, they get hurt, they get back up, and they knock down opponents and force turnovers in the process. Just ask Garfield, Franklin, Woodinville, and Juanita. Bothell is the Blue Train and the defense is our engine. Keep chugging, D!

Playoff Time

Bothell over Inglemoor - not by a mile, but a foot

Spagetti Bowl streak moves on

Driving rain, thunder, and the distraction and excitement of being broadcast to all the troups overseas, and on iHigh.com through their Great American Rivalry series could not dull the intensity that is the Spaghetti Bowl. Inglemoor came (as they always do) intent on beating Bothell any way possible. Instead the Cougars pressed through a first half deficit and shut down Inglemoor in the second half. James Korn holds for Johnny Hekker winning kick

Riding into the endzone for the only touchdown was John Kirchner who had 141 rushing yards. All the other scores came from the foot of Johnny Hekker. "He has always been arms and legs," said his mother, " It is nice to see he can effectively use both." With this win over Inglemoor, Bothell stands alone in first place in KingCo 4A. This game also represents the Cougs second "Back to Back" KingCo 4A Championship in 6 years. The Spaghetti bowl has been won by Bothell the last 7 years.

By the way, reminder to check Tony Quintos website for the best action shots around. He took the photo above.

Bothell Smells like Victory today!

Bothell 19 vs Eastlake 13

After a year of focus on this game against Bothell, Eastlake was into the drama with a student section staged for a "White Out" cheers of "Smells like Bothell" and a greeting committee for the Bothell players and fans.

True to coach Bainter's leadership and the heartbeat of the team, Bothell answered all the hype on the field. Today the only thing we smell in Bothell is VICTORY.

1 and 0 boys, every week 1 and 0. This was a big game but it was just another game where Bothell learned a little more about who they are, and the work they still have to do. They were down at the half, had some interesing referee calls, and still pulled the family together to fight until the last buzzer. Cudos to Ben Moschel, Craig Monson, Jon Kirchner, Jamey Mulvihill, Johnny Hekker, Cory Burke (way to turn the game around), Fiji (Patrick Otterbeck you are an animal) Boone Nichols, Trey Burwick, the whole defense, and our amazing coaches. This whole community is proud of you for playing Bothell Football, Bothell's way.
