Bothell's 'Blue Train' slams Oak Harbor
By DARREN FESSENDEN
SPECIAL TO THE P-I
BOTHELL -- So this is what the best defense in the state looks like.
Bothell crushed Oak Harbor 42-14 on Friday at Pop Keeney Stadium for a berth in the Class 4A state semifinals.
Next weekend, Bothell (12-0) will play either Ferris in Spokane or Graham-Kapowsin at the Tacoma Dome.
The Wildcats (11-1), who defeated Bothell 21-14 last year in the state championship game, had their 18-game winning streak snapped before a crowd of several thousand.
"The Blue Train hit us this year," said Oak Harbor coach Dave Ward, referencing Bothell's well-known nickname. "We derailed it last year, but it was in full force tonight."
The Cougars were allowing 6.4 points per game -- best among 3A and 4A teams -- and entered with a turnover-margin of plus-23. Bothell committed three of the game's seven turnovers in this one, but never punted and allowed just one touchdown when the game was still in doubt.
Bothell junior Kurt Stottlemyer had two interceptions for a defense that yielded just 182 yards. Amazingly, that's slightly higher than the Cougars' average (165 ypg).
Patrick Ottorbech, a splendid 5-foot-9, 180-pound junior, staked the Cougars to a 28-7 halftime lead with three rushing touchdowns. He had all 139 of his yards in the first half on 12 carries.
"He'll make you miss and then he'll outrun you," said Bothell coach Tom Bainter, whose team rushed for 300 yards. "He's a great back."
Bothell senior quarterback Johnny Hekker (10-for-12 for 160 yards with two touchdowns and one interception) was dead-on despite suffering a left knee sprain last week. He completed his first six passes, one a 48-yard bomb to junior Perry Conricode (five receptions, 114 yards) for Bothell's second score.
"He's gotten better each of the last four weeks," Bainter said.
Bothell had scoring drives of 89, 80, 60 and 54 yards and racked up 283 total yards before halftime. The only time the Cougars didn't score was when they tried a halfback pass from Ottorbech that was intercepted.
Senior Johnny Encinas, who replaced future WSU quarterback Marshall Lobbestael this season, entered with 28 touchdown passes and more than 2,200 yards for Oak Harbor. But he had a forgettable outing, going 11-for-24 for 96 yards and two interceptions.
Senior running back Chris Valencia (48 yards on 12 carries), who had the game-winning touchdown in the 2006 state title game, scored both Oak Harbor touchdowns.
Bothell senior Jon Kirchner (118 yards on 14 carries) had a 4-yard touchdown run to make it 35-7 in the third quarter. Oak Harbor muffed the ensuing kickoff and Hekker, on the next play, connected on a beautiful fade pass to Conricode in the right corner of the end zone.
The stands were nearly filled an hour and a half before kickoff at 7:30. By 6:30, it was a downright circus.
Extra bleachers on the north end of the field were packed, and there were onlookers four to five deep in front of the stands and behind the Bothell sideline for the entire length of the field.
One estimate had the crowd at 8,000, with at least 2,000 being Oak Harbor fans.
"To play in this place is real tough," said Ward, who added that he's interested in seeing how Bothell does on a neutral field. "It's a real home-field advantage for them."
