FAB 50 NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL RANKINGS

Despite major division state playoffs moving into later rounds – even semifinals – the first 25 teams from last week's Rivals.com FAB 50 are still playing this weekend or in one case is already celebrating an unbeaten state championship season.

document.write(insertImage('/IMAGES/Camper/PHOTO/WILLIEMOBLEY07N11200.JPG', '', 0, 267, 200, 1, 'Eden Prairie\'s Willie Mobley', 'Rivals.com', 1196129182000, '', 1014, 'Align=Left'));

Eden Prairie's Willie Mobley
The highest-ranked team to lose from last week was No. 26 Cretin-Derham Hall of St. Paul, Minn., but the team the Raiders lost to was No. 25 Eden Prairie of Minnesota, 50-21, in a long-awaited meeting at the Metrodome last Friday of that state's two highest-ranked squads.

In what was called by the St. Paul Pioneer Press as the "most anticipated matchup in Prep Bowl history," Eden Prairie used a devastating ground-based offense to chew up the explosive Raiders. The Eagles rushed for 520 yards and kept the ball so long that Cretin-Derham Hall only had two possessions in the second half.

It is the second straight title for Eden Prairie, which was led by head coach Mike Grant and his son, quarterback Ryan Grant. They also are members of perhaps Minnesota's first family of football since Mike's father and Ryan's grandfather is former Minnesota Vikings head coach Bud Grant, one of the winningest head coaches in pro football history.

There was plenty of movement in this week's FAB 50, however, from the No. 33 position downward.

One of the highest-ranked newcomers also went in despite losing. That would be new No. 39 Coffman of Dublin, Ohio, which took on No. 2 St. Xavier of Cincinnati and battled the Bombers right to the very end before losing by just 10-7 on Saturday night at Welcome Stadium in Dayton.

Coffman was basically the No. 51 team last week but rises despite the loss because it gave the Bombers a tougher battle than did No. 42 Colerain of Cincinnati one week earlier. The Shamrocks, who like St. Xavier were unbeaten entering the game, gave up just three first downs in the second half and had the ball deep in Bombers' territory late in the game. St. Xavier survived thanks in part to a tackle by safety Fred Craig at the 8-yard line that prevented Coffman's Trey Fairchild from going out-of-bounds. The clock then ran out on the major upset bid since the Shamrocks had no time outs left.

In addition to Coffman, other newcomers in the FAB 50 this week are Joliet Catholic of Illinois; M.L. King of Lithonia, Ga.; Bothell of Washington; Ridley of Folsom, Pa.; Destrehan of Louisiana; Montgomery Bell Academy of Nashville, Tenn.; Longview of Texas; and Arrowhead of Hartland, Wis.

Here are this week's Rivals.com FAB 50 national rankings:

The win gave the defending state champs their 27th consecutive victory and advances them to face South Dade Friday in the region finals. The output gave Harris a Dade County season record 41 TD passes. Wide receiver Aldarius Johnson landed 10 passes for 119 yards and two scores.

2. St. Xavier (Cincinnati, Ohio) 14-0 (2)
The Bombers held on to survive a threat from previously-unbeaten Dublin Coffman and prevailed, 10-7. in the state Division 1 semifinals before 11,000 fans at Dayton. Senior do-it-all Danny Milligan scored all the Bomber points with an 8-yard TD on a first quarter reverse plus the conversion kick. In the fourth quarter, Milligan gave St. X. a 10-0 lead with a 37-yard field goal. Coffman advanced to the Bombers' eight-yard-line when time expired. The Bombers will play Mentor (12-2) in the state finals Saturday at Fawcett Stadium in Canton.

3. South Panola (Batesville, Miss.) 13-0 (3)
The four-time defending state Class 5A champion Tigers were pushed to the limit in the state quarterfinals before prevailing, 28-21 over Tupelo. It extended the Tigers' state record, and active national best, win streak to 73 games. The Tigers trailed, 21-14, entering the fourth quarter before rallying behind quarterback David Renfroe, who completed 6 of 9 passes and three scores including two to Xavier Lee, who landed the 18-yard game-winner on a fourth down and seven play with 2:50 left. Darius Barksdale rushed 29 times for 124 yards. South Panola will play Olive Branch (11-2) in a season rematch in the semifinals this weekend.

4. Katy (Katy, Texas) 12-0 (4)
After Houston Madison methodically went downfield on a 21-play, 11:15 drive to start the third quarter and cut the Katy lead to 20-8, Kansas State commit Trent Hunter returned the ensuing kickoff 67 yards and his team scored two plays later as the Tigers beat the Marlins 42-8 in a Class 5A Division II area playoff game at Rhodes Stadium. After Hunter's big return, Aundre Dean reeled off a 13-yard run and Tigers' quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell connected with John Taylor for a 6-yard touchdown to push the lead to 28-8. Dean, a UCLA commit, had another big game, racking up 150 yards and three scores on 23 carries. The win marked Katy's sixth straight area-round playoff victory - the last time the Tigers were ousted in the second round was a 2001 defeat at the hands of Madison and then-quarterback Vince Young. Katy next faces Pasadena Memorial (9-2-1) in the regional semifinals Saturday at Rice Stadium.

5. Prattville (Prattville, Ala.) 13-0 (5)
The defending state Class 6A champion Lions hiked their win streak to 28 games with a 38-14 victory over previously-unbeaten Foley in the quarterfinals. Prattville will face unbeaten McGill-Toolen (13-0) of Mobile in the semifinals this weekend. Against Foley, the Lions held a 346-188 total offense yardage margin. Quarterback Casey Weston completed 8 of 10 passes for 141 yards and two TD passes -- both to Emmanuel Davis.

6. Carroll (Southlake, Texas) 11-1 (6)
In a battle of last year's Class 5A champions, Southlake Carroll scored four first-half touchdowns and cruised to a 37-18 win over Cedar Hill. Playing a second straight contest without star running back Tre Newton, the Dragons' defense forced Cedar Hill out of its comfort zone by forcing four turnovers and containing the run. Cedar Hill rushed for 229 yards but was held to 91 in the first half, while in the meantime Riley Dodge threw four first half scores, and the margin was an insurmountable 28-3 at the break. Dodge finished 17-of-33 for 223 yards and found Jared Freeman, Blake Cantu and Ethan Cunningham (twice) for scores. The Dragons next face 11-1 Abilene in the regional semis - Carroll trounced the same foe 52-0 back in 2005 in the two teams' last meeting.

7. De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) 11-0 (7)
The early going of the Spartans' CIF North Coast Section Class 4A semifinal against Monte Vista of Danville didn't go smoothly as the Mustangs led 7-6 midway through the second quarter. By halftime, though, it was 21-7 and then a third-quarter explosion helped push the final margin to 50-15. Kylan Butler, a standout junior, scored four times to lead De La Salle and rushed for 113 yards. Dominic Russo led the defense with a 43-yard interception return. The Spartans will take next week off and then will meet California of San Ramon (11-1) in the NCS Class 4A final on Dec. 8 at McAfee Coliseum. After that would come the team's probable selection to play in the CIF Division I state bowl game. (CalHiSports.com)

8. Cardinal Mooney (Youngstown, Ohio) 14-0 (9)
The defending state Division IV champion Cardinals improved their win streak to 28 games with a 28-0 blanking of Marion Pleasant in the state semifinals. Mooney broke open a close contest with 21 second half points to advance to face Coldwater in the title game Saturday at Massillon. Coldwater handed Mooney its last setback, in the 2005 finals, after Mooney won the 2004 title. Tailback Brandon Beachum rushed 21 times for 157 yards and a score. The Cardinals were advanced one spot in this week's FAB 50 since they own a stronger win against Gateway of Pennsylvania, which went overtime against previous No. 8 Central Catholic of Pittsburgh. Cardinal Mooney also owns a win over Mentor, which is playing St. Xavier of Cincinnati in this week's Division I state final. Whatever Ohio playoff division the Cards are in, it's pretty ovbvious they are one of the nation's elite squads.

9. Central Catholic (Pittsburgh, Pa.) 13-0 (8)
In what is being called the greatest WPIAL championship game in history, Central Catholic edged FAB 50 No. 49 Gateway, 35-34, in overtime at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. Gateway rallied for 15 points in the final 62 seconds to tie the game at 28, then, in OT, Tino Sunseri scored on a fourth-and-goal, 1-yard sneak and Matt Oczypok tacked on the game-winning PAT to keep Central Catholic alive in a bid for the PIAA Class AAAA state title. The game's dramatic finished started when Emmanuele Matthews returned an interception 82 yards for a score, giving Central Catholic a 28-13 lead with 1:02 left in regulation. It took Gateway only 31 seconds to pull within 28-20 on a Rob Kalkstein-to-Corey Brown TD pass. Gateway recovered the onside kick, and on the third play, Gateway connected on a hook-and-lateral for a 29-yard score. Kalkstein hit Jonathan Pryor, who in turn, pitched the ball to Cam Saddler, who scored. Kalkstein connected with Steve Horvath for the game-tying two-point conversion with one second on the clock. In OT, Gateway went ahead 34-28 when Leon Green scored on a fourth-and-goal plunge, but the PAT snap was mishandled and the conversion was no good.

10. Booker T. Washington (Miami, Fla.) 11-0 (10)
The Tornadoes advanced to the state regional Class 4A finals by dispatching Hallendale for the second time this season, 41-0. Booker T. won in the regular season, 49-0. In the playoff game, Brandon Harris accounted for three touchdowns -- one receiving, one rushing and one passing. The Tornadoes advance to play Dwyer on Friday in the regional finals.

11. Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.) 12-0 (11)
The Huskies had a week off looking to get their offense in sync before they play Brophy College Prep in the Class 5A Division I semifinals this week. The last time Hamilton was on the field it defeated Westwood of Mesa, 21-14.

12. Pahokee (Pahokee, Fla.) 12-0 (12)
The defending state Class 2B champion Blue Devils scored a repeat season victory over King's Academy, 39-10, to advance to next weekend's state semifinals. The opponent will be Frostproof. Pahokee exploded for 20 second quarter points vs. King's Academy to take a 26-0 lead at halftime and never looked back. Janoris Jenkins scored the final TD in the fourth quarter on a 75-yard pass interception return.

13. Northside (Warner Robins, Ga.) 12-0 (13)
Tijuan Green carried 23 times for 152 yards and two scores as the defending state Class AAAA champion Eagles blanked Evans, 28-0, in the state playoffs. The Northside defense forced four turnovers -- two pass interceptions and two fumbles. Northside advanced to play Rome this weekend in the quarterfinals.

14. Tulsa Union (Tulsa, Okla.) 13-0 (14)
It wasn't the easiest of times for the Redskins in their Class 6A state semifinal matchup against Muskogee but they were still able to come away with a 13-6 win to remain undefeated. Brandon Rogers capped off the opening drive with the lone touchdown of the game on a 20-yard pass to Anthony Foster for the 7-0 lead that would be enough for the win, thanks to a stellar defensive effort. Facing passing leader Trae Cook, the Redskins defense held him to just 17 completions on 34 passes for 184 yards while limiting the running game to just 46 yards and came up with multiple fourth down stops. Tress Way kicked two field goals and Jeremy Smith rushed for 192 yards on 35 carries for Union, which will now play Jenks in a much-anticipated showdown for the state title.

15. Jenks (Jenks, Okla.) 12-1 (15)
For the second straight week, Jenks won by a 35-7 final score, this time over previously unbeaten and FAB 50-ranked Midwest City, to set up a rematch with Union in this week's Class 6A state championship game. The Trojans are looking to avenge their lone loss of the year after blowing a 13-point lead with under ten minutes remaining. Chris Adkins rushed for 137 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Trojans led 21-0 at halftime and 28-0 entering the final quarter against Midwest City. Mark Ginther threw a 5-yard touchdown and Colton Dust swept the score up to 35-0 in the fourth quarter on a 16-yard carry. The Bombers were held to just 159 yards of total offense. This will be the 12th straight year that either Jenks or Union will be taking home Oklahoma's largest-class state crown.

16. St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City, N.J.) 11-0 (16)
For the third straight year, St. Peter's Prep and Don Bosco Prep will square off for the state's overall No. 1 ranking in the final private school game of the year. Although both St. Peter's and Don Bosco secured a state title meeting more than a week ago with state semifinal victories, the honor of this contest determining the state No. 1 ranking held form when both teams won Thanksgiving Day games over traditional rivals. In a system unique to New Jersey, its three-round playoff format is interrupted by one week dedicated to Thanksgiving weekend rivalries. The Marauders routed Hoboken, 35-13, in their game.

17. Westfield (Chantilly, Va.) 13-0 (17)
Westfield rolled up a staggering 522 rushing yards while posting the highest score in a Northern Region final during its 58-34 victory over West Springfield. Mike Glennon, the team's star-studded QB, spent more time handing off as Steven Tabot (193 yards and two touchdowns) and Brian Kennedy (182 yards and three touchdowns) led the offense. Six players scored touchdowns for Don Bosco.

Glendora came into its CIF Southern Section Inland Division quarterfinal matchup against Centennial with a 9-2 record, but was no match for the Huskies as the CIF Div. I Bowl Game frontrunner rolled, 49-7. Centennial rushed for 281 yards and ringleader Ryan Bass scored on runs of one, 30 and one yard plus a 21-yard reception in the easy win. 24. Armwood (Seffner, Fla.) 12-0 (24)
Eric Smith rushed 19 times for 160 yards and three scores as the Hawks dominated Hillsborough of Tampa, 35-0, in the state Class 4A regional semifinals. Armwood now advances to play rival Tampa Plant, which ended Armwood's season last year in the regional final. The Hawks dealt Plant its only regular season setback.

25. Eden Prairie (Eden Prairie, Minn.) 14-0 (25)
In the Eagles' 50-21 win over previous No. 26 Cretin-Derham Hall for the Class AAAAA state title, they shut down an opponent that had been averaging 47 points per game and all that was despite giving up a 98-yard kickoff return that opened the contest. Eden Prairie was led by Scott Lindner with 30 carries for 155 yards and one TD and by Ryan Grant, who completed nine of 12 passes for 129 yards and two scores. Look for coach Mike Grant's team to move up in upcoming weeks as teams above lose in various state playoffs.

26. Rockhurst (Kansas City, Mo.) 13-0 (27)
After a slow start, the Hawklets came out and dominated the second half to capture the Class 6 state championship by a 28-9 score over Mehlville of St. Louis. Trailing 9-7 at the break, sophomore Sal Belfunte returned the second-half kickoff 77 yards to set up a Drew Temple touchdown run to take the lead which they would never surrender. Belfunte also would set a Show-Me Bowl record with 101 punt return yards that included a 70-yard return for a touchdown. Temple scored in the fourth quarter on a 63-yard run to finish the game with 179 yards and two touchdowns. As Drew was doing so well, big brother Tony was doing the same at the other end of the state in Kansas City in Missouri's huge win over Kansas. With the win, the Hawkets have now won eight state football championships.

27. Permian (Odessa, Texas) 12-0 (28)
Mojo Magic nearly hit a snag Saturday afternoon as visiting Montwood of El Paso scored on two long marches and dominated the first quarter to establish a 14-0 margin. Permian took over from there, however, scoring 23 points in an eight-minute stretch in the second stanza on the way to a 37-17 win. The game was still in doubt until early in the fourth quarter when Taylor Byrd hit Melvis Pride on an 80-yard scoring strike to push the lead to a more comfortable 30-17. Byrd passed for 227 yards and two TDs, while also rushing for 53 yards and the game's final score. Pride caught five passes for 147 and two scores while the Panther defense kept Montwood out of the end zone for the game's final three quarters. The win sets up a rematch with Euless Trinity next Saturday at Abilene's Shotwell Stadium - the Panthers pounded the Trojans 30-3 early in the season.

28. Birmingham (Lake Balboa, Calif.) 11-1 (29)
The Patriots and Taft of Woodland Hills have a great rivalry in the San Fernando Valley area of Southern California, but in last Wednesday's L.A. City Section quarterfinal game, the Toreadors were no match for Birmingham as the defending city champs romped to a 50-7 victory. Many felt this game could be competitive, but the Patriots' defense held a young Taft club to negative 25 total yards while Evan Jenkins intercepted two passes, including one he returned 63 yards for a touchdown. On offense, senior back Milton Knox upped his season totals to 1,838 yards and 32 touchdowns with a 210-yard, four TD performance. Birmingham takes on 8-4 Crenshaw of Los Angeles in this week's L.A. 30. Poly (Long Beach, Calif.) 11-1 (31)
The Jackrabbits have as deep a stable of running backs as any team in California and it was Melvin Richardson and Daveon Barner that did the most damage in Poly's 35-14 CIFSS Pac-Five quarterfinal victory over Newport Harbor of Newport Beach. The junior duo combined for 313 yards rushing and four touchdowns in Poly's second victory over the Sailors this season. This week, in a semifinal showdown against Orange Lutheran at the Home Depot Center, coach Raul Lara is hoping his club doesn't get off to a slow start like it did last year when they stormed back and scored 22 fourth-quarter points in an eventual 23-22 loss. (CalHiSports.com)

31. Dakota (Macomb, Mich.) 14-0 (33)

The McGinty-to-Matthews connection also opened the scoring for North Shore in the first quarter, hooking up for a 39-yard touchdown, as Matthews finished the day with three catches for 93 yards while McGinty passed for 165 yards and was not intercepted. Deaundre Jones added 109 yards on the ground while Tracy Woods scored on a six-yard run early in the fourth to push North Shore's lead back up to 24-14. Up next for the Mustangs is Cy-Fair and dynamic RB Sam McGuffie in a regional semifinal.

34. Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) 10-1 (40)
So far so good for the Lancers in their bid to repeat as CIFSS Pac-Five and Div. II state champs as they move on to the Pac-Five semifinals courtesy of a 28-16 victory over state-ranked Edison of Huntington Beach in last week's quarterfinal game at Orange Coast College. Lutheran sophomore Exavier Edwards returned the opening kickoff for an 85-yard touchdown and the Lancers never looked back. Ricky Pemasa came through three sacks from his linebacker position and scored a touchdown while rushing for 88 yards on offense. This week, the Lancers take on No. 30 Long Beach Poly in a rematch of last year's Pac-Five semifinal game won by Lutheran, 23-22, after Poly stormed back only to miss an extra point that would have tied the game. 36. Alta (Sandy, Utah) 13-1 (38)
Season over. 39. Coffman (Dublin, Ohio) 13-1 (nr)
After scoring 500 points in their first 13 games the Shamrocks were only able to score seven points against Ohio's top ranked St. Xavier and ended up seven yards away from pulling off the semifinal upset. 40. Parkland (Allentown, Pa.) 13-0 (46)
Sam Tajiri had a night to remember Friday, scoring the go-ahead touchdown and then blocking Hazleton Area's potential game-winning field goal attempt in the closing seconds as Parkland escaped with a 16-14 victory. Parkland scored on its first possession and the game appeared to be another easy outing for a Parkland team that had shut out its last seven opponents. However, Hazleton hung tough and the score was only 10-0 going into the fourth quarter. Hazleton scored a pair of TDs to go ahead 14-10 before Tajiri's 52-yard scoring run put the perennial AAAA state title challenger back in front. With nine seconds remaining, Hazleton attempted a 27-yard field, which Tajiri blocked. This week's state playoff foe is Washington of Philadelphia.

41. Bothell (Bothell, Wash.) 13-0 (nr)
This is a good week to jump the Cougars up into the top 50. One week after they dispatched defending champion Oak Harbor, 42-14, in the Class 4A state playoffs, they took on Ferris of Spokane in a battle of unbeatens and this time won, 14-7. Rami Salha saved the day by falling on a fumble at the one-yard line with just seconds left as Ferris was two feet away from a game-tying score. Jonathan Kirchner rushed for two TDs to lead Bothell. Another Spokane school, Lewis & Clark, awaits in this week's game.

Brentwood Academy was limited to just 144 yards of total offense while the Big Red rushing attack combined for 293 yards.

49. Longview (Longview, Texas) 11-1 (nr)
Longview got a degree of revenge with a 28-14 victory over South Garland in a Class 5A Division II area playoff Saturday at Texas Stadium, eliminating the team that had previously knocked the Lobos out of the playoffs in both 2003 and 2005. After South Garland cut Longview's halftime lead to 21-7 on a five-yard run by Nick Florence, Longview was facing a fourth-and-six at the South Garland 36-yard line. Out of punt formation, Longview ran a fake and Zach Decker found Jonathan Oliver for a seven-yard pass. The conversion kept a 15-play, 7:04 drive alive, which was capped by Johnny Garrett's 19-yard touchdown run. Garrett had a season-high 219 yards rushing. The Lobos get 9-3 Leander next in a Class 5A Division II regional semifinal.
