The KingCo 4A football title may be decided this weekend, when top-ranked Bothell travels to Eastlake. Both teams are undefeated in six games and average more than 40 points a game.

But Eastlake coach Gene Dales says don't expect a high-scoring contest.

"Our kids feel real neglected about the defense they play," Dales said. "This is the third year in a row where we're the statistical leader on defense in KingCo. On the bright side, it makes our kids play that much harder. When teams are scoring a lot of points, it's usually because the defense is setting things up for the offense with field position."

It would be easy for Bothell coach Tom Bainter to make a similar argument. The Cougars have put together three consecutive shutouts, including Friday's 16-0 win against a very talented Woodinville team. Bothell has allowed only 27 points in six games, while Eastlake has given up 35.

Eastlake's Ryan Robertson has passed for 1,565 yards and 18 touchdowns and has the biggest receiving crew in the league. His targets are burly tight ends Easton Fix (6-3, 230) and Joey Rosanova (6-2, 230) and three wideouts, all 6 feet 2 or taller.

"We have the size advantage," Dales said. "Bothell really flies to the ball, so give them the edge with quickness. We can't have any slow-developing plays. I'm guessing it'll come down to some good old trench warfare."
