At Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell, Patrick Ottorbech returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a TD and Cody Burk returned a punt 75 yards for the second-ranked Cougars' second score in their 25-point first quarter. Bothell quarterback Johnny Hekker threw three TD passes, two to Trey Burwick and the other to Tommy Sorensen.
Alaska's No. 1-ranked high school football team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday night.
And it wasn't even close.
Bothell -- ranked No. 1 in the state of Washington -- scored early and often en route to a 45-7 victory over the Mustangs at Pop Keeney Stadium.
Bothell (1-0) scored 25 points in the first quarter, just one shy of what Chugiak had given up in its first three games (26) combined.
Two of the touchdowns were on special teams -- a 95-yard kickoff return and a 75-yard punt return.
"We didn't quite play at the level they were at," Chugiak coach Duncan Shackelford said Saturday night. "They ran back the opening kickoff. Our offense stalled and they ran the punt. They put 14 on us before they even had their offense on the field. "
Bothell quarterback Johnny Hekker threw three touchdown passes and running back Patrick Ottorbech collected two scores on the ground.Nathan Oliver scored the lone touchdown for Chugiak (3-1) on a 7-yard run in the fourth quarter. He also kicked the extra point.
"They've very good football team," Shackelford said. "We knew we had to play great football to even be in the game with them."
